Budgeting is far from an awesome activity and it is rarely going to be the enjoyable end to a day or week for you. You are here for some personal finance advice and you are reading this article, so you are probably pretty concerned about finding a hobby that you can do on a budget. There are a few paths to go, and for our generation, it seems that playing is our favorite hobby. Sports, video games, board games and card games all fit the bill, so how do you get into these particular hobbies without having to go over your budget?
Reduce your Costs
For sports, video games, movies and other related hobbies, there isn’t a huge amount of room for increasing your “portfolio” by investing the stuff you need for these forms of entertainment. With that being said, you can enjoy each of your past times at a significantly lower price by following a simple words of advice. Newer is not better!
If you are headed out to the movies, forget the blockbuster that just hit the theater today, instead head over to the dollar movie theater and take a date with you and you’ll end up paying less for snacks, drinks and tickets than you would for a single ticket for the new movie. Just stay away from spoilers until the other movies show up at your dollar theater.
If sports and video games are more your things think second hand equipment to save some cash. You can buy games and sporting equipment used for a fraction of the price against its new price tag and you can also trade in the stuff when you are done with it for credit towards something else. This can get you in cheap without having to break the bank to just blow off some steam.
Make Your Hobby an Investment
Believe it or not, there are hobbies out there that are also an investment. Most of them are in the collecting sphere of entertainment and generally focus on the braniacs among us. Collectible card games like Magic: the Gathering or World of Warcraft: The Card Game are both great ways to burn off some steam, keep your brain active, and turn your hobby into an investment. Comic books also fall into this area, thought he payoff generally takes a bit longer to see. Comic books have grown up a great deal, as you have probably seen in the recent movies like The Avengers and Chris Nolans’ Batman series.
The key here is to keep your stuff in good shape and if you follow a collectible hobby, start looking into speculation articles all over the web. Speculators treat the collectible based hobbies as a stock market of sorts and look at items possibility of going up and down in price. You can actually turn your hobby into buying into the hobby at a low price with the hopes that these collectibles sky rocket later. Collection based hobbies aren’t limited to card games and comic books though, so explore your local “downtown” and see what shops catch your eye. Maybe collecting art at street festivals is a way to get started in the collecting world!
In many cases, the actual item being collected is not nearly as important as the hobby itself. Collecting things and trying to turn them into something profitable becomes a hobby in and of itself and can actually turn into some money making opportunities instead of draining the bank account.
