5 Things to Consider Before Starting a Blog
Blogging has evolved from a measly online diary to an infamous area of creativity whether it be of paid advertising of products, online store, or information hub about different topics under the sun. While it is very easy to start a blog — logging on to Blogger.com, creating a site, designing it, and writing a few bits of personal knowledge, you might want to think again whether blogging is for you.
1. Hobby or making money?
What is your blog going to be for? If is going to be an outlet of your stress and creativity? Do you have a passion for writing? Are you willing to selflessly share your thought, ideas or knowledge over your blog? Or is it going to be a medium for you to make money from home?
It is important to identify your reasons for putting up a blog and keep that in mind all the time. You wouldn’t want to grow money in your wallet when you initially thought of writing a blog because you love to have blog.
2. How much time are you willing and able to spend on it?
If you are writing a blog for leisure purposes alone, it is understandable that you are only going to spend only your spare time doing it. However, if you are putting up this blog to make money and yet you are not going to devote as much time as you can, then there might be a problem. Starting a blog is one thing; committing your time to it is another.
3. What areas are you good at?
Blogging is no time for mid- or quarter-life crisis. From the beginning, identify your strengths and though optional, your weaknesses. It will allow you to focus on a few things. Do not attempt to tackle everything in your blog as you will confuse you audience. You may be good at a couple of things, and stick to that. You are not limited to just one topic all through out. Don’t think of joining the bandwagon just to look cool.
Focusing on a few topics will also make you known for those topics. Think refinery29 for fashion blogs, Big Oven for cooking, Everything Everywhere or Footpedia for Traveling or Pick the Brain or Hundred Goals for inspirational. Aren’t those simply inspiring?
4. Who are your target readers?
Your target readers say a lot about how you will go about designing your blog. Be honest. Don’t say you are going to have readers who are fans of Gossip Girl when you do not even know who Jenny Humphrey is. Give up that “xoxo” in the end of every post, then. Identifying who your target readers will help you create, shall we say, drama in how you will present your blog. Are they going to be pre-teens who love to watch Dora the Explorer, Teenagers who love to read Cosmo magazine, yuppies who are able to support themselves, or mothers of two boys and a girl? Visualize who they are going to be and talk to them.
5. How are you going to do it?
As I said, starting a blog is easy, but maintaining it is another, more tedious task. There are a million blogs out there. What sets you apart? What’s in your blog that others do not have? YOU. Be yourself. Do not play around, pretending you know a lot of things. Drop the “Jack of all trades but a master of none” stint. There must be something you are most capable of doing compared to others in the planet. Now it is your task to find that thing. Remember that persistence is key. You do not expect ideas to flow smoothly day after day. Every blogger feels that at some point in their blogging life. But what’s more important is that you do not easily give up.
Keep learning. Someone once said, “You can never be too overdressed or overeducated”. Enrich yourself so that you may be able to share more.
